Thought process:
Quite a number of my church friends would very much like to learn some basic strumming for cell, but have no opportunity to do so. Problem is that I don't have the time to teach, as much as I would like to, and I thought of doing a guidebook instead.
Was thinking along the lines of an intensive crash course, along the lines of 'play in 4 weeks'... organised into three "practice sessions" each week. Could even have mp3 or video samples for illustrations.
Then I figured that it'd be fun to do it as a collaborative effort on GP, maybe have the chapters up on google docs for people to edit. Someone will have to do the final edit though (me?). Plus point is that we can use it to teach our non-Christian friends too.
So.. up for discussion:
i) Thoughts on this, and how we can work togther? I have some material from another workshop, maybe I can upload it to google docs, but we can discuss the outline here first. Also, who's interested in helping?
ii) Chapter outline. Suggestion:
- Week 1: the basics
i) Parts of the guitar, what are chords, chord families, reading tabs.
ii) G major chord family 1: G C D chords
iii) G major chord family 2: Em Am chords
- Week 2: moving on
i) Learning to strum 1
ii) C major chord family: C F Em Dm chords
iii) Learning to strum 2
- Week 3: moving on again
i) A major chord family: A E F#m C#m chords
ii) Varying your dynamics
iii)E major chord family: B G#m chords
- Week 4: finishing up
i) D major chord family: Bm chord + revision of chords
ii) Playing independently + transposing chords
iii) For further practice: barre, sus, 7th chords |

Cool idea, so it's like trying to make your own guitar-basics-book?
If i can help in any way, i will;) Just ask.
Maybe we can work out an online course, with movies. Personally i like to learn from what i see, and not from books. Like teaching the basic chords, and how the function in a song.
My 2 cents;) |

Thats a kewl idea, I do guitar lessons in my city and I know how great it would be to give someone a book to help them understand the basics. Usually I spend half my lessons drawing diagrams haha.
I would be keen to help swing me a pm if you want me to do any articles for the guide. |

It wouldn't necessarily hurt to have a GP basic instructional, but at the same time there are some really good instructionals on Youtube already. I like GP because it focuses on the popular techniques in worship but generally for other stuff there are plenty of good resources on the internet already. |

true!!!
---
but a basic GP course would be cool...
but where do you want to start? I mean, you need to know a few chords before you start improvising and using powerchords... |

You know, I would really like to be able to do strumming patterns like for example the song Break Free in the bridge.
I cant seem to get that right. |

in sixteenth notes:
V-V^V-V^V-V^V...
V = downstroke
^ = upstroke
- = pause
bolded = play (all other strokes are muted)
start slow to ensure you get the pause in there, then speed it up!
You may also find that lighter picks make it easier to strum fast. |
